Structure of the Communion of Convergence Churches USA
The CCC-USA in its structured life might be likened more to a tribal sense of covenant relationship and connectedness than a strictly institutional or arbitrary order. We see ourselves as a more organic, family oriented grouping of local communities of believers, as well as various special focus and itinerant ministries, all gathered in what we call “dioceses” and “archdioceses”. Dioceses, functionally speaking, are likened to clans in a tribal arrangement. They are the linked network or family of local churches, ordained leaders and specialty ministries who relate as a particular “clan” family under the fatherly oversight and apostolic care of a bishop. A certain number of dioceses within what we call an “archdiocese” then make up the “tribe” or related clan groupings (dioceses) of churches and ministries under various bishops known, again, as an “archdiocese”.
The CCC-USA is a national communion member of the worldwide Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches, a 10 year old communion family of Christ’s one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church that has pioneered the spiritual renewal concept of the “convergence movement”, or “convergence of streams” (Go here to read more about the convergence movement).
You have connected with the website of the Archdiocese of the Incarnation, currently made up of 8 dioceses and a number of specialty focus ministries that work throughout the USA and other parts of the world. An archdiocese is overseen by an archbishop, serving the life and mission of the various diocesan families and their diocesan bishops, who seeks to equip, encourage and give vision and direction to the extension of the Gospel throughout the various apostolic clans or dioceses. The archbishop works together collegially with the bishops of the archdiocese to seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the mind of Christ for His people we serve together.
Our structure within the communion is "relational" in nature rather than geographical. Congregations and ordained leaders are a part of a diocesan family through their relationship with their bishop, rather than by virtue of geographic location. This relational (rather than hierarchica l) orientation is a reflection of the strong identification with the Celtic tradition of the Church within the CCC-USA which stresses spiritual/relational kinship ties and networks, akin to the churches that were founded by Paul relating to him as a spiritual father, rather than a more institutional, bureaucratic organizational structure.
Therefore, new congregations or networks of local churches desiring affiliation with the CCC-USA, as well as those desiring ordination and those who have previously served in ordained roles in other expressions of Christ’s Body, seek reception based on affinity with the leadership style, vision or character of a particular bishop or diocese, rather than necessarily based on geographic proximity.
Please feel free to explore and connect with any of our bishops in your interest to know more of the heart and character of God’s work among us as you seek for a spiritual home. May the Father heart of our great God and Savior lead us all home to redeemed family and community in His “household” of faith.
Yours at the same Table,
Archbishop Paul Wayne Boosahda
Apostolic Facilitator and Overseer – The Archdiocese of the Incarnation/Diocese of St. Patrick
